John Loughlin made what I believe is a key point regarding digital editions in their various forms in
Future of Print to Include E-Readers
Much of the talk always seems to revolve around th “magic bullet” of what will save the publishing industry. Everyone seems to be looking for the one product, process or application that will leap above the evolutionary process to the perfect end. Every product I can think of that has reached a high level of design or functionality (ipods, cars, tv’s, airplanes) have done so in incremental steps.
What struck me about Loughlin’s comments are that e-readers have the potential to turn the tide towards a new future for the publishing industry. It’s like when people get asked in job interviews: “Where do you think you’ll be in 5 years?” The only sensible answer is: “Who knows! But I do know the decision I make today will put me in a great position to make the right decision a year from now.”
